Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and Addictive Qualities

MSG:A Silent Enemy

Excerpts taken from The Slow Poisoning of America by John Erb

MSG triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates causing rats to become obese.

MSG is found in Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

Restaurants that use MSG in abundance:  Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, TGIF, Chili's, Applebee's, Denny's, and KFC.

MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human body.  It is also scientifically proven to cause obesity.

Many studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to diabetes, migraines and other headaches, autism, ADD-HD and even Alzheimer's.

The food manufacturers lobby group supporting MSG [http://www.msg-facts.com/facts/msgfact12.html] explains that the reason they add it to food to make people eat more.  A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods it is added to.

Frequent consumption of foods containing artificial flavors, colors, MSG, and other additives can diminish the effectiveness of the immune system.

Most well-known side effect is Chinese Restaurant Syndrome, a condition characterized by numbness, weakness, heart palpitations, cold sweat, and headache.  Animal studies show that MSG can cause brain damage, stunted skeletal development, obesity, and female sterility (Dadd, Debra, The NonToxic Home, 1986, PP. 117-118).
